JIAOZHOU BAY BRIDGE – CHINA – world’s largest over Sea Bridge

INTRODUCTORY FACTS & FEATURES
Time is passing rapidly and the world is having wonders. Without any doubt we can say that this era is the era of engineering. From the years of recent past we have seen a number of engineering wonders. Engineers have created masterpieces which are just breathtaking. The same happened in China and Chinese engineers set a world record by making a bridge over the sea. On 30th June 2011 China opened the world’s largest over Sea Bridge which is called Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is a roadway bridge in eastern China’s Shandong province. This bridge is “T” shaped. There are three entry and exit points on the bridge. The total length of the bridge is 42.58 km which is 26.4 miles. This bridge links the Qingdao which is the eastern port city to Huangdo Island. The bridge has reduced the distance between Qingdao and Huangdao by 30 km. The construction of this bridge is the part of Jiaozhou Bay Connection Project which includes the construction of Qing-Huang Tunnel as well which is an under sea tunnel.

These two projects were opened at the same date for the traffic. There are 5000 pillars which are keeping the bridge high over the sea water. The construction of the bridge took more than four years to complete. This engineering wonder is the result of the efforts of 10,000 workers who worked round the clock to make it possible. They worked in the form of two teams. It is expected that the bridge will carry 30,000 cars per day. It’s really a big load of traffic and shows that how many people will be facilitated from the bridge. Previously the longest over Water Bridge is in Louisiana which is named Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

History
This amazing bridge was designed by Shandong Gaosu Group. Its design is just marvelous that it will not be effected with the sever earthquakes, typhoons and collisions with the ships. This is a big project in real a big structure which you can imagine from the fact that about 450,000 tons of steel and 2.3 million cubic meters of concrete were used in the construction of the bridge. The width of the bridge is about 35 meters (115 ft) and carries six lanes and two shoulders. The cost of the project is more than 10 billion Yuan which is equal to $1.5 billion but according to some other reports the cost is more than $2.3 billion.

SAFETY CONCERNS
According to some media reports, Chinese authorities were in hurry to open the bridge regardless some safety issues like incomplete crash barriers, loose nuts on guard rails and missing lights. But chief engineer of the project claims that there is nothing wrong with the safety of the bridge and the problems highlighted are just of minor nature.

There are number of world heritage sites in China. The people of the region have fertile minds. You can not restrict the intelligence to a specific time or era, ethnic group, colour and caste. It is the gift of God that has been in all times. Being a human being my mind stucks to the point that how the people of ancient era may have created such kind of masterpieces. Their intelligence level and their hardworking habits have made them immortal through their great work. Among such a great masterpieces from the history there is the statue of Leshan Buddha. It is referred as the largest carved Buddha in the world. In real sense it is the great human work.

When you visit this historical site, you find a mountain sized statue. You will be amazed that how the people at that time carved the cliff to make this giant statue. The construction of the statue was started in 713 A.D. Construction of the Buddha faced a funding hurdle. The construction work was stopped for about 70 years due to the funding problem.

Finally the construction was completed in 803 A.D. In the history the construction of such kind of statues just has the spiritual aspect. The purpose behind the construction of the Buddha is very logical. The view of the statue is that the river is flowing under the feet of the statue. The water of river was turbulent that was not allowing the ships to pass through. A monk at the time thought the construction of the Buddha. He was of the view that the construction of Buddha would calm the intensity of the waters and ships would be able to pass through the river easily. Surprisingly the main objective of the construction has been achieved. As we know that it was built by cutting and carving the cliff, this process threw a heavy number of stones into the river. These stones calmed the waters of the river and allowed the shipping vessels to pass.

It is situated in Sichuan province of China. When it was being constructed it was the tallest statue in the world. Now the Buddha is considered to be the largest carved statue in the world. The height of the Buddha is about 71 meters which is approximately 233 feet. It is about 28 meters wide which is approximately 92 feet. The statue has been constructed in sitting position. It seems like a king sitting in his chair with his hands resting on his knees. When you look towards the mountain which has been carved to construct the statue, it seems that the mountain is embosoming the Buddha. You can imagine the volume of the Buddha with the fact that its tiny toenail is so big that a person can easily be seated on it. The condition of Buddha is being deteriorated day by day. It has not given proper protection from pollution and other weather conditions. This heritage site must be protected.

Guilin has become a big tourist attraction with its wholesome beauty but there are some unusual things and places which make it different and unique in nature. Like, when you take a boat ride in the Li River, you will find bizarre mountains of amazing shape. This boat trip will be your most memorable trip as compared to any other trip around the world. There are Limestone Mountains and caves when you move ahead in the river. These are called Karsts. These Karsts present the unmatched scenery in the world. Among these karsts there is a hill with the name Elephant Trunk Hill. This hill seems jutted in the river. The amazing about the hill is that it looks like an elephant. There are wonderful caves in the area. One of these caves there is Reed Flute Cave. The cave is the most beautiful place to visit in Guilin. In this cave there is Crystal Palace for Dragon King. This beautiful location has been used to shoot a number of films. Another cave which is famous is named Seven Star Cave. Another place that has good fame is Fubo Hill. Formally it is called Fubo Hill Park. In the park you will find a great creative and inscriptive work. There are other numbers of very beautiful places like Seven Star Park, Yaoshan Hill Park, Solitary Beauty Peak and Moon & Sun Pagoda etc. When we move with the twist of the river there are strangely shaped mountains. These mountains are given names like Elephant Trunk Mountain, Old Man Mountain, Pagoda Mountain etc. there are number of rice fields. This beautiful place has a number of different kinds of trees like bamboos and conifers.

GEOGRAPHICAL FACTS
Guilin city is situated at the west bank of the Li River. The city of Guilin is surrounded by two rivers, Lijiang and Pearl River. There are four lakes in the city as well. The total population of the city is about 1.34 million. The meaning of Guilin is also interesting. It means “The Forest of Sweet Olives”.

CLIMATE
Guilin belongs to subtropical monsoon system. Guilin remains very cold in winter and very hot and humid in the summer. There are intensive rains in the summer.

EXCEPT SCENERY
Except the beautiful scenery of the Guilin, there are number of other things for which Guilin is known. For example in Guilin you can find jade in variety. You can buy different kind of souvenirs which are made of jade. Guilin is famous for its pepper and chilli sauce, different kinds of pickles and Guilin rice noodles.

Tourists have to do nothing, just pack your bags and get in to Guilin for the ultimate experience of natural beauty.
