“THE ROMANTIC ISLAND”
LOCATION & GEOGRAPHY
If we say that Bora Bora is possibly the most beautiful singly located most famous island on the earth, it will not be wrong. Bora Bora is an island in French Polynesia which is the overseas collectivity of France in Pacific Ocean. The original name of the island is referred to the Pora Pora in Tahitian language. The location of the island is about 230 kilometers to the northwest of Papeete which is the capital of French Polynesia. The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef which enhance the beauty of the place. The place is best for the honeymooners and romantics to enjoy their private time.
HISTORY
It was 4th century when the island was inhabited. This inhabitation was done by the Polynesian settlers. The island was not sighted by the Europeans till 1722. The first sight of the island was of Jacob Roggeveen back in 1722. Then again the island was sighted by James Cook in1770. In 1842 the island was declared an autonomous territory of France. A protestant church was founded in 1890 by a missionary society which arrived from London. The name of the island has different evolution stages.
The early Polynesian name of the island was Vava’u. When it came to the 18th and 19th century it turned as Bollabolla. The reason behind the original name Pora Pora is that there is no alphabet B in the Tahitian language so it is called Pora Pora. Bora Bora has been the part of a world renowned event which is called World War II. The Americans made the island as military supply chain base, oil depot and seaplane base.
TOURISM
If someone says that Bora Bora is the dream island then it will be absolutely right. There will be no second opinion about this statement. The environment of the island is just extraordinary. The uniqueness of the island is the beautiful built bungalows which are over the water. Above the crystal lagoon and the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano in the form of two peaks which are Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu. Bora Bora is one of the major tourist attractions around the world. The main dependence of the island’s economy is on the tourism. You find most of the tourist destinations in the crystal clear water of the island but you can visit some attractions on land as well.
Underwater world in the island is also amazing. The southeast side of the island is a coral garden. This is a natural underwater park where you can find all kind of fish and corals. The view of the Bora Bora is really breathtaking. When you visit across the lagoon you will definitely find that why it is the source of attraction for many tourists. There are lush green valleys and slopes. Small islands which are called Motu, are covered with palm trees circle the lagoon which look like a necklace. If we want to give a definition to the beauty of island then we can say “a tiny emerald in the setting of turquoise encircled by a necklace of sparkling pearls.” This place is small in size but it is full of natural beauty. Its beauty is magical. It is still not enough words to describe the beauty of the island. I am feeling shortage of words while narrating the beaut.
