Historic Introduction

The city of Rome in Italy has a great rich history. There are number of places from ancient times. There is the Pantheon temple, complex of Roman Forum, the Capitoline Hill etc. Among these amazing sites there is the most amazing of the all, the Colloseum, originally the Amphitheatrum Flavium. This is a real great site to see. This is the greatest and the largest ever build amphitheatre from the ancient times. Amphitheatre is a type of theatre which was invented back in the history by the Greek engineers. The main distinguishing word is Amphi which means round, so the word amphitheatre means round theatre. In such kind of theatre the people sit around the stage and enjoy the games or other festivities. The Colosseum is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. By visiting the site it is believed that it is undoubtedly the engineering and archeological wonder of the world. Initially construction was started in 71 AD and completed in 80 AD. The reign of Domitian’s made some modifications during 81 AD to 96 AD. It is a great example of Italian architecture and construction expertise.

Purpose of Construction

The purpose behind the construction of the place was recreation for the masses. The most famous there were gladiatorial games. These games or shows were being called Munera. These shows were arranged by the emperors to show their power. Theses shows usually were for more than one day. There were number of acts but the most famous was the fight between gladiators and animals or between just the gladiators. This fight had not been ended till death. The participants were slaves, criminals and war prisoners. There is the evidence that an emperor also took part in such bloody fight.

Building Description

It is elliptical in shape. Total area of the Colosseum covers about 6 acres of land. Its width is 156 meters and the length is 186 meters. The perimeter of the place is 545 meters and. The outer wall is 48 m high. The central arena, where all festivities are performed is 87 m long and 55 m wide. This central arena is surrounded by a wall which is 5 m high. After that wall there are the cemented seats for the spectators. The seating capacity of the place is 50,000 spectators. As it is the seating capacity, so it needs special measures to enter or exit from the place. Keeping in view this point the architects made eighty entrances in the Colosseum. Out of these 80 entrances 76 were for the ordinary people while 1 was for the emperor and remaining three for the elite class of the Rome. There are four storey of the colosseum. The highest storey was for the general masses. The lowest seats or storey was for the renowned people of the empire. Underground there were rooms and cages where wild animals were rested.

Millions of visitors from around the globe come to see the glory of the place. At night the amazing light combination gives an ultimate look. The light illumination goes from white to gold which gives a beautiful look. The condition of the place has been deteriorated that’s why is not being used for any kind of such activities but a number of shows have been held outside the Colosseum. Tourists can find a museum at the upper level of the Colosseum.
