You may have seen a number of pictures or may have traveled to many waterfalls in the world. But it would be an exciting and extreme adventurous experience to have a visit of the world’s highest waterfalls which is named Angel Falls. Angel Falls are the highest falls of the world with the height of approximately 979 m (3212 ft). These falls are located in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. Canaima National Park is the place where these falls are situated and drops over the edge of the Auyantepui Mountain. This waterfall is created with the water of Churun River. This has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. This waterfall is about 15 times higher than the famous Niagra Falls. The water falls are at such a big height that the water is evaporated before reaching the ground. There are strong gusts of wind by which the water is carried away and forms the mist and touches the ground in the form of vapors.

WHY THE NAME ANGEL FALLS?

The name of the waterfall may be suggesting to someone that it has any kind of link with angels or any other story of this kind. But it is not like this. Infact the name of the fall is on the name of Jimmie Angel. This is the man who visited the site for first time in a plane back in 1933. The name was given in 1937 when Angel and his three companions including his wife tried to land the plane at Auyantepui Mountain, but the plane damaged and they started journey descending back on foot which took 11 days to reach the ground. This was the very first visit of any person to the Angel Falls. To honour this effort of Jimmie Angel the name was given to the falls. In 2009 the President of Venezuela, Hugo Shavez showed his intention to change the name of the falls from Angel Falls to Kerepakupai Meru.

The beauty of the Canaima National is the mixture of magic and reality. This is the real beauty of the nature. This fascinating world of the park is the great combination of all beauties of the world. TOURISTS MUST KNOW?

This waterfall is the most important tourist attraction in Venezuela. But it is still not able to attract as many tourists as it would have because it is very difficult to reach there. the waterfall is located in an isolated forest. You have to reach the Canaim camp by air which is the starting point of the river trip towards the base of the falls. To have a river trip wood curiaras are used for which a certain depth of water is required. Best time for this activity is June to December.

This is the place which everyone should try to see at least once in life time.

HISTORY

The history of this spectacular place is not so far long. It was discovered in 1885 by David Livingstone, but the tribes near the falls are living since hundreds of years. David Livingstone was a Scottish and Physician by profession. Before the David’s visit, it was named Mosi-oa-Tunya. Then Livingstone named the falls on the name of his Queen Victoria.

LOCATION & FORMATION

This beautiful place is located in southern Africa on Zambezi River. It is situated between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River flows over a basalt sheet. On this sheet there are distant sandstone hills shallow valleys. There are also some islands which are in increasing numbers near the falls. The visitors will wonder that there are no mountains or valleys which create waterfall. There is just a basalt plateau which is wide spread on hundreds of kilometers. The river plunges headlong into the 100 m vertical chasm. The river spans here about one and half kilometer. If we say that this water fall is the largest water fall of the world then it will not be wrong. We can not say that it is the highest or widest water fall in the world. Its height is 108 m (354 ft) and width is 1,708 m (5604 ft). With this height and width it forms the largest falling water sheet of the world. Victoria falls are easily accessible from anywhere in Africa.

WEATHER

There is a rainy season from November to April and weather remains dry for the rest of the year. River faces a flood from February to May and it reaches to its peak in April. When the water falls it creates a spray of water. This spray is normally 400m high and some times it reaches twice of the normal. Visitors can see the spray from a distance of 50km.

NATIONAL PARKS & WILDLIFE

There are number of national parks in the area. One is called Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park which is about 66 sq km and the other one is called Victoria Falls National Park which is 23 sq km. 40km Zambezi National Park has also been established along the river. These national parks also contain an abundant wildlife. There you can find elephants, buffalos, zebras, lions, leopards, vervet monkeys and baboons.
