TOMATINA “Tomato festival in Spain”
IntroductionIts time to take you to Spain to introduce a very interesting festival of the recent times, this is none other than La Tomatina, held in a small village of Spain named Brunol. It is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of August every year. You may have observed the different fruit fights with friends but tomato fight is really interesting and something with great fun. You can understand the fun that thousands of people are gathered in streets having tomatoes in their hands and throwing the tomatoes at each other. This is the biggest vegetable fight festival of the world. About 50000 people participate in this festival with tons of tomatoes. The streets of Bunol become red with the paste of tomatoes. People seem like taking bath in tomato paste.
History of Tomatina
There are number of theories about the history of Tomatina but it is still not clear. The most common among the different theories is that back in1945 there was annual parade which was passing through the streets of the Bunol. Some youngsters who were in the street they tried to join the parade. Unfortunately, one of the youngsters striked with the person in parade. He started swinging everyone around him. In reaction youngsters grabbed some tomatoes from the near by vegetable shop and started throwing at the person and in result police had to intervene. Next year these youngsters gathered at the place, bought their own tomatoes and started fighting. This time police again intervened and the local council banned any such activity but it continued. There was a change in 1950 when council allowed the party. Next year faced some opposition. But in 1957 it was again banned with strict penalties. But after two years, in 1959 the council approved Tomatina but with some specified rules.
How to Fight
The first event of the Tomatina is pole climbing. A grease pole is made which have to climb while holding ham in the hand. When someone is able to drop the ham off the pole, tomato fight is started. It is started at about 11 with a rocket fire and with that chaos begins. The tomatoes which are used for fight are brought from Extremadura where these are not expensive and are not good in taste. Trucks bring tomatoes in large quantity. The participants pick the tomatoes and throw at each other. There is no matter that you know each other or not. It’s all just to enjoy and have fun.
Rules & Precautions
It is the most important rule of the fight that the tomatoes must be crushed before thrown to not harm the opponent. Participants must bring gloves and goggles with them. Participants are not allowed to bring any kind of bottles with them to avoid any kind of disturbance. Participants must be careful from the lorries carrying tomatoes. Two rockets are fired one at the start and other at the end. When second fire is heard no one is allowed to throw the tomato.
