About Maya Civilization
The history of Maya Civilization is about 3,000 years old. It started from Guatemala, Honduran, Mexico and Belize. The Maya civilization has great contribution to the development of history. The people of Maya civilization are thought to be very skilled and hardworking. Mayans have the development of a very sophisticated written language on their credit. Historians think that may be it was the first native written language to the Americans. People of this ancient time are recognized as great mathematicians. The number system they developed gave the concept of zero for the first time. The calendar which we use today was also developed by Mayans.
History
It is a historical archaeological site located in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. This site was built about 1,000 years ago. This is the remaining of Maya Civilization. When you travel through the Mexican jungles and Guatemala, you reach the Yucatan peninsula. In Yucatan you will find the mysterious temples and pyramids of Maya civilization. This was considered as sacred site in Mayan Civilization. The meaning of the word Chichen is “at the mouth of the well of Itza”. Itza relates to the Itza tribe. The following are some of the main monuments at Chichen Itza.
Temple of Kukulkan
At the centre of the Chichen Itza there is Kukulkan pyramid. This pyramis has been selected as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramid has four sides. All four sides have stairs upward. It is the best known and most famous construction in the Chichen Itza. This pyramid stands about 75ft tall. There are two occasions in the year when at the time sun rise and sun set the cornet of the structure form the shadow in the shape of plumed serpent. The original pyramid temple has a small temple underneath it. In this temple there is a statue of Chac Mool. This is a stone statue with a human figure, laying in reclining position with head upwards and looking to the right.
Great Ball Court
The great ball court in Chichen Itza depicts that the people of the area and this civilization were great sportsmen and games loving. This court is 225 ft in width and 545 ft in length. You will experience a very strange thing here in this ball court. If you whisper from one end of the court then it will be heard at the other end and everywhere in the court easily. The archaeologists and historians are engaged in finding out the secret but yet they have not succeeded.
Temple of the Warriors
When you reach at the temple of the warriors in Chichen Itza, you get really impressed with the structure of the place. There are 200 square and round columns on the west and south flanks of the temple. There are carved shapes of Toltec warriors of the square columns. These are cemented and are coloured with brilliant colours. When you enter the main temple there is a Chac Mool statue which is in reclined position.
Beside these there are number of other archaeological and historical sites in Chichen Itza like Temple of the Bearded Man, Temples of the Jaguar, Tazompantli, Platform of Eagles and Jaguars, Platform of Venus and much more.
This archaeological wonder is required to see by tourists. Visitors can not enter the main chambers of the area. People can walk around the temples and other sites. Enjoy your trip to Chichen Itza.
